Synopsis:

“The Year My Parents Went on Vacation” takes place in Brazil in 1970, when the country was ruled by a military dictatorship and its national soccer team, led by Pelé, was making its way toward the finals of the World Cup.

Accordingly, sports and politics both play parts in this film, directed by Cao Hamburger, which filters the tumult and trauma of Brazilian history through the perceptions of a 12-year-old boy named Mauro. The film is most seductive when it focuses on the details of daily life in the lower-middle-class São Paulo neighborhood Bom Retiro. The rhythms of commerce, worship and domesticity — the sounds of apartment house courtyards, synagogues and shops — frequently overshadow what turns out to be a fairly conventional and sentimental story.

The Wackness centers upon a troubled high school student named Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck)a teenage pot dealer who forms a friendship with Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Ben Kingsley), a psychiatrist and kindred lost soul. When the doctor proposes Luke trade him weed for therapy sessions, the two begin to explore both New York City and their own depression.

Propelled by an exuberant hip hop score, The Wackness captures the spell of 1994–a time of pagers, not cell phones; a time when Tupac and Biggie were alive but Kurt Cobain had just died. Funny and moving, The Wackness is an offbeat tale of two lost souls stumbling towards maturity.

When Did You Last See Your Father? is an unflinching exploration of a father/son relationship, as Blake Morrison deals with his father Arthur’s terminal illness and imminent death.

Blake’s memories of everything funny, embarrassing and upsetting about his childhood and teens are interspersed with tender and heart-rending scenes in the present, as he struggles to come to terms with his father, and their history of conflict, and learns to accept that one’s parents are not always accountable to their children.

Welcome to indy rock’s in-your-face response to the tired rituals of the yearly pancake eating contest called the Stampede. Breakfast at Rock Central is an insider’s tribute to a grassroots musical event and the Victoria Park landmark that hosted it. For ten solid years, Rock Central redefined the Stampede Breakfast and took it to the limit. Director Lock Fulton and his pals lovingly taped the afternoon breakfasts in all their drunken glory and didn’t cut out too many of the dogpiles in the straw.

To make sense of all the horsin’ around, interviews with various varmints were recorded over a three year period including Matt Masters, Bob Quashnik, Randy Willis, and Fubar stars, Andy “Tron” Sparacino, Paul Spence and Dave Lawrence. Highlights include appearances by the Dudes, the A Team, many fans and members of the Calgary Police Service. Breakfast at Rock Central is about how a gang of determined musicians reinvented the Stampede party for their own community and the good folks of Victoria Park. - Peter Stinson
